New WNU School of Uranium Production 1 August 2006 Dear WNA Member I am writing to inform you of a new initiative from the World Nuclear University: the creation of the WNU School of Uranium Production (WNU-SUP). The new School’s purpose is to respond to the global shortage of trained personnel in uranium mining techniques. The WNU-SUP was created through a consultative process, led by WNA and NEA-OECD, that included leading uranium mining companies. Our aim was to establish a world-class training facility to educate students in all aspects of the uranium production cycle, from exploration to mine remediation. The new WNU School will operate with logistical support from DIAMO, the Czech national uranium company. DIAMO has a wealth of experience in all aspects of uranium production and has a convenient, economical location in the centre of Europe. Initial courses will be centred on ISL mining and will be offered for operators, regulators and also executives. At a second stage, we envisage additional courses that include alkaline milling, underground mining, heap leaching and uranium exploration. The first training course – a four-week course for ISL mine operators – will be held in the Czech Republic starting Monday, September 11, 2006. As a result of the consultative process that led to the School’s creation, we already have some applicants. But getting this innovative new institution fully operational will require early and full participation from the industry. We invite you to send any suitable staff who would benefit, and we encourage you to inform others who may be interested.
